New event will be of help to Canterbury
Canterbury judokas will have more chance of gaining a title at the provincial championships today as a new event, the young men’s division. has been introduced for the first time. The division, for boys 16 years of age to under 20, caters for juniors moving out of thei- grade and will give them time to adjust to the senior grades. The new event has meant the men’s division will now be broken up and there are less entries for the senior divisions. However, about 1501 judokas have entered the| tournament, to be held in! the St Patrick’s church hall, I
and will be competing in five events —the senior men’s and women’s, the young men’s and junior boys’ and girls’ grades. Three black belts, G. Coulson, I.- Staples and H. Broekhuijson, have entered the championships, but only Staples is expected to win a title as the other two judokas have completed little training lately because of injuries. Staples, a nominee in the New Zealand t.am for the world championships next itnonth, gained third placing in the heavy-weight division of the national championships in April and should easily win his weight division, as well las win the open division.
