ANCHOVY CATCH

Experiment promising (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, June 15. The research vessel W. J. Scott unloaded a promising catch of anchovies and similar fish in Gisborne yesterday after the first of the midwater trawling experiments it will conduct until the end of August. The vessel, which will fish off a wide area of the east coasts of the North and South Islands, caught about six tons of anchovies, sardines and sprouts in two trawls, said her master (Captain M. Barker) today. The catch was made about five miles off the coast between Tuahine Point and Tatapouri, in 25 to 30 fathoms. Mr Barker said the catch was netted in two runs, one lasting two hours, and the other half an hour. It was an encouraging sign for the fishmeal industry, he added. The catch will be made into fish meal by J. Wattie Canneries. Ltd.
