Lane reflectors

Sir, —Recently, large numbers of small white reflectors have been laid on a number of Christchurch roads, notably Ferry Road and Moorhouse Avenue. I assume these are to make the centre lines and traffic lanes clearer to the night motorist. However, does the Ministry of Transport realise the dan- : ger the reflectors pose to the unwary cyclist or motorcyclist? When ridden over, ' these reflectors can give an unpleasant jolt, and might cause an accident. A motor- ; cyclist travelling at speed could be upset or sent off course into another vehicle. Moreover, they seem especially dangerous at intersections, where they are most prolific. Changing lanes or crossing the centre line involves weaving one’s way between these menaces. I therefore suggest that, if nothing else, the Ministry decreases the number of these reflectors at intersections. —Yours, etc., P. J. MILNE. June 8, 1973. [Mr A. Goldsmith, traffic superintendent of the Ministry of Transport, replies: "The reflectors have been installed on Moorhouse Avenue and Ferry Road by the Ministry of Works who are the road controlling authority in each case. I am referring the correspondent’s letter to the District Commissioner of Works at Christchurch for ■his comments.”]
