Ward decision attacked
Disappointment over the Christchurch City Council’s decision on the proposed ward system was expressed in a statement last evening by the chairman of the Citizens and Ratepayers’ Association (Mr M. O. Holdsworth). The council seemed to have lost sight of the protection of the voter, he said, as there had been no acknowledgement of the need to be impartial in setting ward boundaries.
“No attempt has been made to hear objections, and there seems little point in advertising the scheme if this was to be the case.
“The scheme adopted; i gives electors in the Avon! ward the same voting] 1 strength as electors in the; East, South and North] Wards, and remains in the; control of the party in power j in the council. “While the introduction of; wards is not disputed, under ! no pretence can the manner, in which the council has pre-; pared and adopted the sys-; tern be considered fair and democratic treatment of the electors,” Mr Holdsworth said.
