Yachtsmen regain titles

Two skippers who were successful in the corresponding series! three seasons ago. J. S. Weam (Finn class) and E. Orange (Paper Tiger catamarans). regained their Estuary Pennants yachting titles by winning the third heats of the 1972-73 contest on Saturday. Both have decisive margins over their rivals, and, in company with H. M. Hobden (Moths) and C. Papps (A class catamarans), are assured of; over-all victory in their divisions. Another catamaran helmsman. B. Papps (Sabres), has only to add starting points to his total to have an unassailable lead. C. Papps. Wearn, Hobden. B. Fapps. D. J. Bridges (Zephyrs) and Miss M A. Stemmer (P C.ass' retained unbeaten records with one race remaining. Bridges should star ahead of his only opponent in his section, and Miss Stemmer—with an advantage of 73 points over th, perennial run-ner-up, C. Roberts—is strongly favoured to keep in front of her male rivals. Most Interest in the final heats, to be sailed on April 1, will be centre on the J.C. and Sunburst classes, where the top two crews are separated by only a few points. J.C. CLASS Tijuana, skippered on this occasion by M. Woods, finished *»cond among the J.C. yachts on Saturday and has accumulated

250 points. Miss R- Shields (235)r is close behind, with the winner of the third race, E. L. Snowdon, quite a- distance back in third place. The holders of the Sunburst; pennant. H. H. Kingham and Mrs, E. A. Edgerton, conceded line honours and the over-all lead to C. and R. Nordstrom in this w ellrep resented division. However, ithe margin held by the Nord--1 stroms is only 10 points. P. Lester appears to be safely ahead of the other O.K. Dinghy vachtsmen. and P- McDowell is , virtually certain in the Starling class. The total number of yachts on • the Estuary on Saturday, 115, ’was a little disappointing when compared with previous entries, . but the late starting time, made necessarv by the tide, may have contributed to this. 1 Abbreviations used in results ; are (CYC) Christchurch Yacht, : Club).
