Drinking drivers

Sir, —Most motorists drink and drive, but few' drive “sensibly,” drunk or sober. Alcohol is not a prime cause of death on the roads, but random breath tests will demonstrate a move towards enforcement after the timid and erratic approach to traffic control encouraged by the previous Minister of Transport. Throughout a gory 1972 you kept reporting “campaigns” where flagrant and deliberate contempt for traffic law brought only warnings. Our laws are adequate, but their application is - deplorable, and. unless motorists can feel confident that enforcement is not a matter of the health, domestic stability, or mere whim of the traffic officer concerned, , reaction will bring us the [ Draconian sanctions of the [E.E.C. driving licence, with its surrender to the evils of popular psychology. Better random breath tests than random LQ. or “ink-blot” I tests by our many do-it-your-self experts in psychology.— [Yours, etc,.

“JIM ABELSON.” January 10, 1973.
