Sydney sales
(N.Z. Press-Association) SYDNEY. Agents acting on behalf of a prominent Queensland owner, [A. Grant, paid $21,500 for a Wilkes filly on the second night of the summer yearling sales at the Newmarket Stables, on Tuesday night. The filly, from Fancy Time, is closely related to the outstanding gallopers, Fine and Dandy and Time and Tide.
Mr Grant had to outlast challenges from the Melbourne bloodstock agent, J. Shannon, and A. Mack, a wealthy client of the Rosehill trainer, M. Hood. The agents said later that the filly would be broken in and prepared for an early start to her turf career. “However, her immense stud value was the main attraction,” they added. The filly will go to Gainsborough Lodge Stud at Toowoomba, in Queensland. To cap a great night for Newhaven Park Stud, a later member of their draft was sold to E. Smith, acting on behalf of his brother. T. J. Smith, for $13,500.
Smith secured the yearling, a bay colt by the staying sire, Ruantallan, from Wenona Girl’s full-sister. Golden Saga, after a bidding duel with Mr Shannon.
From a total of 143 lots catalogued for sale, 121 were sold, realising 5292.000.
The average of $2415, although slightly above the corresponding night at last year's summer sales, was disappointing.
