The Australian Government was contemplating an approach to the International Court of Justice in The Hague if French nuclear tests were continued in the Pacific, the Prime Minister (Mr Gough Whitlam) said yesterday.
Mr Whitlam told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting that the Australian Government had indicated to the French that it believed the tests were unlawful. The Government, he said, had asked for an assurance that no more atmospheric tests would be held. The Prime Minister said that if the Australian Government did not receive satisfactory assurances, it proposed to institute proceedings in the International Court to restrain future tests in the. Pacific by the French Government.
