The High Court of Australia should be the final court of appeal in Australia, the prospective AttorneyGeneral under the newlyelected Labour Government. Senator Lionel Murphy, said yesterday.

Speaking in Sydney, Senator Murphy said the Privy Council was an anachronism which was inconsistent with Australian independence. “'The members of it (the Privy Council) are not appointed or elected or responsible to anybody in Australia.” he said.

“The Privy Council is a relic of colonialism is so far as it can handle Australian cases. It is a constitutional absurdity not consistent with Australian independence and dignity."
