MANY TALENTS OF ARTIST

An exhibition of paintings, prints, and tapestry weaving by Gordon Crook being displayed in the downstairs gallery of the Canterbury Society of Arts building reveal him as a person of various talents.

Mr Crook, who was bom in England in 1921, studied at the St Martins and Central Schools of Art. He left England to settle in New Zealand earlier this year.

His paintings and mono prints, about 15, consist mainly of bold abstract patterns that may be intended as designs for his weaving, two examples of which are exhibited with one having a similar, broadly-patterned approach. The medium in which his six black-and-white prints are executed is not given, although it appears to involve a photographic silk-screen process. Here he seems to be attempting a type of surreal-pop imagery* based mainly on newspaper photographs and advertisements. —-G.T.M.
