Char supplies queried

(N.Z. Press Association) WESTPORT, Dec. 8. Mr P. Blanchfield, M.P., is to refer the question of char (carbonised coal product) shipments from Australia to the New Zealand Steel works in Auckland, to the new Minister of Mines. Mr Blanchfield said that a Norwegian ship, the Sapphire, had arrived in Auckland recently with a second cargo. Char is used in the spongeiron making process. From inquiries he had made, the Waikato Carbonisation, Ltd, normally supplied the steelworks with about 20,000 tons a year, but it appeared that this quantity was insufficient and that the outgoing Minister of Mines had issued a permit for the importation of up to 15,000 tons of Australian char. “The point I want to make is, why cannot we use New Zealand coal and make this product here instead of having to import it from Australia,” Mr Blanchfield said. “I propose to take the matter up with the incoming Minister of Mines,” he said.
