Scheme out next week

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. The final scheme for the reorganisation of local authorities in the North Canterbury area will be released next week, said the Local Government Commission in a statement today. The scheme will be the blueprint for local government development in 7143 square miles of the South Island from the Clarence River to the Rakaia River, and bordered by the Southern Alps to the west. The area is the home of more than 320,000 people, most of whom live in Christchurch. A provisional scheme for the West Coast is in the course of preparation.

Pay rise.—A pay rise of 7.97 per cent for workers in milk pasteurising and treatment stations has been approved by both the Remuneration Authority and the Arbitration Court. Increases are backdated to October 22. The award expires on July 31, next year.—(P.A.).
