‘Substitute victim’

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MANILA, Dec. 8. Government investigators said today that the man who slashed and wounded the wife of President Marcos apparently attacked her as a substitute victim for the President himself.

Authorities named the assailant as Carlito Dimaali, from near Manila. Dimaali’s two sisters and another man, tentatively identified as a brother, were arrested and are undergoing questioning.

Dimaali made statements to his sisters before the attack, investigators said, which indicated that he wanted to kill President Marcos.

They said that Dimaali apparently thought that the President was going to hand out prizes at the civic-awards ceremony near Manila. His wife went instead. President Marcos has accepted an offer by President Nixon to send a specialist to help treat Mrs Marcos. He said that Mr Nixon told him that ail Americans were shocked and dismayed by the attack.
