The forgotten cyclist

Sir, —It was heartening to see in the report of the meeting of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority, in Wednesday’s "Press," that some members are aware that "Abroad, the bankruptcy of planning only for the car has been shown,” and that bicycles are a realistic alternative. I hope that this may be a forerunner of effective measures to encourage the use of this alternative. I believe that one man on a bicycle is not merely as good as, but better -than, one man in a car. He is not contributing to the congestion and pollution of the city, and he is getting some necessary exercise. He deserves to be considered to be at least equally important in city planning.—Yours, etc., JIM McCAHON., Decamber 8,1972.
