JOHANNESBURG, December 7. The president of the South African Rugby Board (Dr Danie Craven) yesterday reacted sharply to a statement by the new Australian Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) that visas would be refused to racially-selected teams.
Dr Craven said: “He must understand that if our teams are not allowed into Australia, his teams will not be allowed to come, to us. He’s the loser, not me.”
Mr Whitlam’s decision
would prevent next year’s South African Rugby team to New Zealand travelling direct to New Zealand via Australia, but Dr Craven said today: “We’ll make a plan.” The South African Minister of Sport (Dr Piet Koomhof) was not available for comment.
Mr Whitlam’s remarks on radially-selected sports teams did hot apply to Maori teams, a spokesman for. Mr Whitlam said today, according to a cable message from Canberra.
The spokesman said that New Zealand teams were not selected'on a racial basis and that was what Mr Whitlam was referring to. New Zealand Maori teams have made several tours to Australia and have frequently been matched against touring teams in New Zealand.
