Improvement in employment
(Neto Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 7. The number of registered unemployed fell 670 in the fortnight to December 1, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Thomson) today.
The total improvement during November was 1374. The returns also showed; A decrease of 295 workers engaged in Government departments. A decrease of 45 in workers engaged in subsidised employment with local bodies. A decrease of 341 in persons on unemployment benefit.
An increase in vacancies recorded, from 3414 to 3574.
The number of registered unemployed fell from 5362 at November 17 to 4692 at December 1. The biggest improvement was in the freezing industry in the South Island where work had resumed, said Mr Thomson. District totals, with No-
vember 17 figures in parenthesis, were: Northland 229 (223), Auckland 703 (712), Hamilton 271 (273), Tauranga 244 (239), Rotorua 258 (358), Gisborne 173 (210), Napier 121 (179), Hastings 115 (175), New Plymouth 67 (64), Wanganui 98 (135), Palmerston North 245 (267), Masterton 7 (8), Lower Hutt 46 (31), Wellington 302 (252), Blenheim 60 (52), Nelson 61 (80), Greymouth 102 (82), Christchurch 489 (456), Timaru 43 (69), Dunedin-Oamaru 409 (553), Invercargill 649 (944).
Fire.—Fire destroyed the top floor of the Hinemoa Private Hotel, Hinemoa Street, Rotorua, on Wednesday night. Five occupants of rooms on the ground floor, including the owner, Mr J. Callendar, escaped unhurt.— (P.A.).
