Test for brakes

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. The Railways new Silver Fem rail-car last night proved that it has good brakes. A young woman "clowning" on the track at New Takapau Road, just north of Wellington, missed death by inches after the driver, Mr C. Forster-Davidson, braked hard.

The sudden braking sent railways engineers and officials sprawling in the cabins of the rail-car, which was on a test run from Taumarunui.

The Porirua police aje investigating the incident. Earlier, the new rail-car had hit unprecedented speeds of up to 76 m.p.h. on the long flat stretches of topgrade track between Feilding and Bunnythorpe. The driver was enthusiastic about the new rail-car’s acceleration. “I’ve driven them all — steam, electric and diesels — in my 35 years,” he said. “This one beats the lot.”
