Programme changes
Minor changes to the programme for the summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club were approved yesterday by the club’s committee. On the first day, February 3, the stake for the Midsummer Handicap has been increased by $lOOO to $4OOO. A trophy, valued at $230 and donated by Dr M. G. Loulsson, will also be at stake. The first three place-getters in the event may be invited to contest the Benson and Hedges inter-island Race on the second day, February 7, if they are not already in the field. The Trial Stakes, for four-year-olds and upwards, will now be a handicap event for the same age group. The Halswell Hack Handicap has been dropped and replaced by a race for three-year-olds and upwards which at the time of nomination have not won more than $2OOO in stakes. On the second day a ninefurlong open race has been added and will carry a stake of $2OOO. The open high-weight has been dropped and replaced by an event for horses that have contested a hurdle or steeplechase and horses eligible for flat hack events.
The McWilliams Wines Stakes will be a handicap for three-year-olds and upwards.
