Warning to M.C.C. (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) HYDERABAD. The openers, Sunil Gavaskar and Ramnath Parkar, issued a clear warning to the touring M.C.C. bowlers with some impressive batting for the Indian Cricket Board President’s XI yesterday. Gavaskar (86) and Parkar (59) shared a century opening partnership, which paved the way for a healthy first-day total of 237 for four.

The M.C.C. was obviously hoping for a reasonable haul of wickets at the start of the three-day match, the opening fixture in the four-month tour of India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

But only the Northamptonshire fast bowler, R. Cottam, could claim any real success, dismissing the President’s XI captain, Mansur Alt Khan, formerly the Nawab of Pataudi, for nought, and Chetan Chauhan for 53. His two wickets cost 54 runs.

Parkar, whose performance boosted his chance of opening for India in the first test against England in Delhi later this month, was caught and bowled by the Yorkshireman, C. Old, in the final over before lunch.

But Gavaskar batted on until well into the afternoon before he was run out.
