Nickel in demand on Australian exchanges
Trading was active and prices higher on Australian exchanges yesterday. Strong buyer demand for nickel scrip highlighted a buoyant mining sector, but Wood-side-Burmah suffered a sharp reversal and other oil issues were dull. Western Mining showed a 14c gain to 354 c. Poseidon rose 20c at 980 c, Seicast jumped 17c to 132 c, and Roebourne continued to regain ground, adding 15c at 295 c. Peko Wallsend rose 10c, as did B.H. South, and M.I.M. gained 7c. The Bank of N.S.W. had a 10c rise at 990 c. The National gained the same at 395 c. The Bank of Adelaide moved up 4c at 314 c. Bums Philp firmed 12c at 514 c. Myer was 6c dearer at 315 c and C.S.R. added the same at 582 c. Ansett dropped 10c to 91c. McEwans rose 30c to 440 c and Coles added 6c at 180 c, Cleckheaton gained 30c to
630 c, and C.U.B. led the brewers with a 16c rise to 530 c. Cascade and Castlemaine Perkins also rose. A.C.1., which has announced a higher interim dividend and profit, firmed 3c to 295 c. The home builders, Jennings and Jonray, made good gains. Oils were generally dull, although selling pressure on Woodside-Burmah brought the scrip down 15c to 265 c. Magellan managed a 2c gain at 138 c, while Ampol Exploration and Santos both traded unchanged. SYDNEY * s® l ®’—Ampol, 93; Ansett, 91; A.W.A., 180; Ass.
