Lanusse adamant
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copuright) BUENOS AIRES, December 6. President Lanusse of Argentina yesterday met the other two members of the military junta to consider demands from supporters of the former President, General Juan Peron, about the conditions for the General Election due to be held in March. General Lanusse made It clear yesterday that General Peron, who returned to Argentina last month after 17 years in exile in Spain, would not be allowed to run for the Presidency in the election, or in any other. He told officers at an Army base near the seaside resort of Mar del Plata: “Peron can be, or try to be, anything he likes in future, except President of the Argentina Republic.” General Lanusse reaffirmed previous statements that the Government would not lift, the August 25 deadline set earlier this year for al! potential candidates to take up permanent residence in Argentina.
This was one of the demands presented to the Government by leaders of more than 20 political parties who met General Peron shortly after his homecoming. Near the east-central river port of Rosario, a man was shot in the abdomen and several persons were arrested when fighting broke out between rival Peronist factions at a Peronist meeting called to select local candidates for the General Election.
