Taxis’ trial run in bus areas

Taxis will be given the same right to use Cathedral Square during peak traffic hours as buses of the Christchurch Transport Board for the next week.

This trial period was approved by the City Council’s traffic committee yesterday after it had met representatives of the taxi companies. “The only prohibition will be on taxis making a right turn from Worcester Street into the flow of traffic at the Square,” Cr W. Massey, the chairman of the committee, said last evening. The new traffic plans for the Square were working well, he said, but it was realised that there were some problems. They included the dropping of taxi passengers at Warner’s Hotel, but there

had never been any intention of banning taxis from turning into the Square from Gloucester Street to do this. Another Christchurch traffic change has come into the city quietly. It is the first “clearway,” Lichfield Street between the peak hours of 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. when parking is banned on the north side, from Durham Street to Manchester Street. Parking meters have been marked with the banned hours, and shortly there will be larger notices drawing the attention of motorists to the clearway. The aim is to improve the flow of traffic on what is a one-way street.
