MEETING ON MERGER
The Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) has agreed to meet Heathcote County Council representatives to discuss the proposal to amalgamate the counties of Heathcote, Paparua, Mount Herbert and Akaroa. "The meeting will be on November 30, we hope,” said the chairman (Mr E. L. Tyndall), at a meeting of the Heathcote County Council. The Minister of Local Government and the Minister of Works have been asked to attend. It was agreed to call another meeting of the councils after the visit to Wellington. New centre.—Sketch plans
for a play-centre building at Holliss Avenue were approved. The building, to cost about $40,000, could be used for indoor sports. The council decided to seek a change of zoning to allow the building to proceed. Objection.—- The County Engineer (Mr F. K. Stone) was asked to prepare a for-
mal objection, opposing an application by the Education Department to the North Canterbury Catchment Board for the right to sink a well at Cashmere High School. Trees.—Mr D. St C. Dunn asked the council to list noteworthy trees, to ensure that they were not cut down without permission. Mr Stone was asked to report on steps taken by other councils. Planning.—Crs J. M. McKenzie and R. H. T. Thompson, with the Clerk and Engineer, were appointed a committee to draw up proposals for a review of the county planning scheme.
