Submissions on weeds
The Committee on Noxious Weeds Administration will be in Christchurch to hear submissions on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday it will inspect nassellatussock areas in North Canterbury on its way to Blenheim. The committee was set up to review the present policy on noxious weeds, and to recommend measures to implement a uniform scheme for weed-control methods. The chairman (Mr J. Fitzharris) said the committee was interested in water weeds as well as pasture weeds. Water weeds were important not only because of their effects on the recreational use of lakes and waterways, but also because they were an environmental hazard. They also added immensely to the cost of maintaining drains, stream and stopbanks in catchment area, said Mr Fitzharris. The committee had already visited Lincoln College to discuss weed control on South Island high country, and would visit other parts of the South Island later, he said.
