CHURCH UNION

Methodists accept (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Nov. 7. Methodist delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of church union at their national conference in Whangarei today. Only seven of the 300 voters opposed the resolution to unite on the basis of the 1971 plan for union, with the Anglican, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches, and the Associated Churches of Christ.

Proposing the motion on union, the Rev. W. J. Morrison, of Hamilton, said all Methodist synods, most quarterly meetings, and 86 per cent of the Church’s members had shown their support for union with the four other churches.

The Rev. G. K. Greening, of Christchurch, who earlier had told the conference that he was not opposed to union but would not be able to give a full ministry within a church united in terms of the 1971 plan, left the conference with two others when the result was announced.
