‘Scultura Italiana’ next week

One of the biggest—. and most valuable—exhibitions of sculpture seen in New Zealand will open in the Robert McDougall Art Gallery next week.

“Scultura Italiano” features 60 works by 33 leading contemporary Italian sculptors. It has been brought to New Zealand by the Peter Stuyvesant Trust and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, has already been shown in Auckland,. New Plymouth, and Wellington, and has drawn big attendances. The sculptures are being packed in Wellington, and are expected to arrive at the McDougall Gallery on Wednesday. They will be unpacked by the gallery director (Mr B. D. Muir) and his assistants, and will be mounted in the gallery early next week. The opening date is November 16. Most of the sculptures are in cast metal, but there are some in stainless steel, one in lead, and one in wood.

Some of the most, famous of the sculptors represented are Giacomo Manzu, Marino Marini, . Aldo Calo, and Emilio Greco, all winners of the sculpture prize at the Venice Biennale. Others include Marcello Mascherini, Umberto Mastroianni, Luciano Minguzzi, Lucio Fontana, and Arnaldo Pomodoro. All these, too, are winners of the sculpture prize at Venice. Also in the McDougall Gallery next Thursday will be an exhibition of sculpture by John Panting, a New Zealander who graduated from the Canterbury University School of Art about 10 years ago, and has been working and teaching in England, making occasional trips home as a visiting lecturer at Auckland and Canterbury Universities.
