CAST OF ‘CAROL’
A Christchurch lyric tenor, Arthur Chapman, has been selected for the leading role as Ebenezer Scrooge in the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society’s musical version of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.” Mr Chapman last appeared for the Repertory Society in the Peter Nichols play, “National Health.” He has also appeared in recent productions of “The Pirates of Penzance,” “The Mikado,” and “Camelot.”
John Harris (known on television as Professor P. Nutt) will appear as Fezziwig, and will also play the role of the second-hand dealer, singing “If you want to dispose of your cast-off clothes.” Several other actors will have multiple roles. Denis Whyte, who has appeared with the New Zealand Opera Company, will appear as Bob Cratchit and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Peter Brown, of the Elmwood Players, will have several parts, and Jim Steele will be Cratchit’s nephew Fred and Ali Baba in the Vision. Others in the cast include Brian Deavoll, a well-known producer, as Marley’s Ghost, and Bruce Gordon as the genial Ghost of Christmas Present.
Although “A Christmas Carol” has a cast predominantly male, there are a few small female parts. Actresses in these include Shirley Rushton, Anne Moore, Lesley Allinson, Barbara Steel, and Michele Harrison. The play, which has been adapted by Harold Pointer, will open in the Repertory Theatre on November 25.
