Goldfinger wins race
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. In punishing seas, Goldflnger won the Epiglass Roaring 40 offshore powerboat race off Caroline Bay, Timaru. Broken and choppy conditions reduced the starting Held of 42 down to 14 at the finish. The leader up to the seventh lap, L.M. 2, driven by G. Mackay (Christchurch), dropped out after propeller trouble with one of his three 140 h.p. outboard motors. A. Rodgers (Christchurch) roared past L.M. 2 and won by a big margin from the winner last year, Milling Machine. Last year, Milling Machine was known as L.M. 1, and was driven by Rodgers. The race’s worst conditions showed in the average winning speed of only 33 miles an hour, compared with 66 miles an hour in 1971.
