G.N. Derby to be later

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The Rowe Cup, for trotters, and the Great Northern Derby, for three-year-olds, at Alexandra Park have been dropped from the programme for the Auckland Cup meeting on December 23, 27 and 30. Mr M. M. N. Corner, the president of the club, said yesterday: “They are the biggest races in their respective spheres In the North Island. By holding them later in the season, we feel they will attract fields more representative of the best talent available in New Zealand, not just the North Island. “The change Is also being made in anticipation of the club receiving more permits. These will be used to extend the season.” He said the dates for the Rowe Cup and Derby would be announced as soon as the club was advised how many extra permits it had been allocated. The growth in prize-money for major events for trotters and three-year-old pacers in the South Island during the Christmas holiday period is undoubtedly having some effect on the Rowe Cup and Derby-, both of which for years drew strong southern support. The deferring of the two races until towards the end of the season almost certainly will result In more South Island owners supporting them.
