Large surplus of labour

There was a labour surplus of 354 men on the Lyttelton waterfront when work began at 7 a.m. yesterday. Only 234 men were engaged for daylight hours and another 50 men for supplementary hours last evening.

Only three vessels worked cargo. They were the Larisa Reysner (Russian), discharging Ecuadorian bananas, the Shaw Savill’s Iberic, discharging general cargo from London, and the inter-island roll-on vessel Holmlea. If the present programme Is maintained, demands for labour should be light, says the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s traffic manager (Mr J. B. Graham). Next Friday (Show Day) is a holiday. Apart from those engaged to work the roll-on vessel Holmlea, the waterfront is expected to be idle that day.

Out-of-work seamen are becoming concerned about the lack of jobs. The South Island assistant secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr T. Stuart) said at Lyttelton yesterday that there had been an average of 30 unemployed seamen at Lyttelton for a month. There were no real prospects of improvement, he said. Mr Stuart said that the loss of one Inter-island ferry (Maori) was distressing, but the possible withdrawal of the Rangatira was alarming. # #

Shaw Savill’s 10-year-old 23,983ton passenger liner Northern Star will pay her third visit to Lyttelton next Saturday. Due at 7 a m. from Wellington, she will berth as usual at Cashin Quay and she will sail for Auckland at 10 p.m.

The Northern Star this voyage Is commanded by Captain I. Saunders. At Lyttelton, she will disembark 147 passengers (114 of them from Britain). She will embark about 100 passengers. Her smaller sister the Southern Cross is still idle on the River Fal.

The Shaw SavlU liner Northern Star is not the only vessel listed in Lloyd’s Register of Shipping bearing that name. Another vessel is the Japanese-built, Liber-ian-registered tanker Northern Star (60,838 tons gross) only two years old and owned by World Wide Tankers, Inc. She is more than 200 ft longer than Shaw Savill’s liner. 4s * *

In reply to "G.R.,” of Harewood, Lyteltton by no means lags behind in container handling, although it is not yet a full container port. For several years Union Steam Ship Company rollon vessels have had a regular container service with Seafreighters and on any normal day these can be seen travelling to and from Christchurch. Standard I S O. containers, as handled at Port Chalmers, Wellington and Auckland, have been stockpiled at Lyttelton for many months. Several semi-container vessels have called in recent times and have handled both dry and refrigerated containers. Normally these vessels use their own heavy-lift gear. In case of any difficulty, the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s floating crane Rapakl is more than adequate. #
