Big lift

It is said that the proof of the worth of a pudding lies in its eating. The proof of the worth of the Hereford and its high standing among cattlemen locally is strikingly demonstrated by the quite spectacular increase there has been in the number of registered herds in Canterbury in the last 20 years. Back in 1950-51 there was only one horned breeder in the province— J. E. Thacker, of Okains Bay, with six cows—and one Polled Hereford breeder—H. G. Jamieson, of Taiko, South Canterbury, with two cows. Just outside the boundaries of Canterbury T. Davies at Charwell, Kaikoura, also had a polled herd with eight cows in it. According to the most recent Hereford herd book —that for 1970-71—there were 16 homed breeders with 224 cows and 33 polled breeders with 572 cows in Canterbury.
