Leading dairy herds
Three herds which headed the production figures collated by the South Island Herd Improvement Association for the 1971-1972 season have also established themselves as the three leading herds in New Zealand.
The herds were the Lelbume herd of A. R. Udy (Menzies Ferry, Southland), the Brookdale herd of Plunkett Brothers (Oamaru), and the Romanac herd of T. H. and B. M. Jones (Springston). It was the tenth time in 13 seasons that Mr Udy’s herd had gained an average of more than 6001 b of butterfat. Last season 21 cows, with a 4.4 test, produced 6321 b of fat in 287 days. Twenty-one cows in Plunkett Brothers’ herd had a 3.9 test, and an average of 6131 b of fat in 300 days, while T. H. and B. M. Jones had 38 cows, a 3.8 test, and 6121 b of fat in 300 days.
