TRAPPED MINERS
Little hope held (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, Nov. 6. Rescue teams are picking their way gingerly through a collapsed coalmine near Sopporo, in northern Japan, making painfully slow progress towards the point where 31 miners have been trapped since last Thursday night. Officials at the mine are pessimistic about the fate of the men, who were trapped about 2000 yards inside the mine when an explosion brought a tunnel down. It is believed that methane gas may have killed the men soon after the explosion. Only half of them carried gas masks, as prescribed by law. Outside the mine, relatives are waiting for some hopeful word. Some of them have expressed anger about the size of the rescue teams, and about the slow progress being made.
