American killed
A 25-year-old United States serviceman was killed and a Christchurch girt injured when the motor-cycle they were riding ran into the gutter in Carlton Mill Road yesterday morning. He was Robert Shantz, of Quonset Point, Rhode Island. A member of a Hercules squadron, he had arrived in Christchurch just five hours before the accident, which occurred at 6.51 a.m. He died about an hour after being admitted to Christchurch Hospital. Miss Christine Lorraine Young, aged 26, of Flat 3, 11 Exeter Street, Merivale, suffered head and leg injuries in the accident. She was reported to be in a fairly comfortable condition last evening.
