PEACOCK FOUNTAIN

The Peacock Fountain, in storage for the last 23 years, is likely to play again—this time on the banks of the Avon, in the grounds of the Provincial Council Chambers.

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering), the chairman of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board (Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P.) and the chairman of the Christchurch Civic Trust (Mr I. G. B. Wilson) are all in favour of the proposal, which is a recommendation of the City Council’s reserves department. The trust has previously offered to organise a fundraising campaign if the fountain were to be re-assembled on an approved site. Under the proposal, the fountain would be maintained by the City Council, and it has been suggested that it be illuminated at night.
