Rural mail deliveries
The frequency of rural mail deliveries to households that now get fewer than six deliveries a week is being reviewed by the Post Office, according to an announcement by the Postmaster-Gen-eral (Mr Walker). Of 78,000 households served by rural mail deliveries, 64,000 get six-day service, but the rest have deliveries varying from five times weekly to once a week, the frequency being related to the density of households along the mail route. It is proposed to consider increasing the frequency as rural mail delivery contracts come up for renewal on a three-year cycle in which about one-third of the total is re-let each year.
