Local body report
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 5. The Government committee on local-body finance would report to him later this month, said the Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) in Dunedin yesterday. Mr Highet said that he expected that several courses for a more equitable system of local-body finance would be suggested. He said that, personally, he opposed a citizen tax if it were a poll tax, because it would be harsh on a person on a low income. It was obvious that rating would always form the basis of revenue for local bodies, but supplementary methods of finance were being considered.
Mr Highet attended the draw of the New Zealand Cup sweepstake in Dunedin by the Post Office’s bonus-bond computer.
