General Election
Sir, — If “Rakaiaman” spends a little more time reading the Values Party manifesto, he will find that the grass roots emphases of Labour and Values policies vary significantly. The former has the old emphasis on expanding material prosperity as a panacea to social ills, the latter focuses on the long-neglected non-material needs of the populace, it sees the growth of “community spirit” as a. better answer to the problems of crime and social unrest, job satisfaction and increased leisure as answers to the problem of unemployment, proposes an education designed to humanise rather than mechanise, a penal system designed for rehabilitation rather than revenge. It also focuses on the crises of the time (ignored in the main by other parties)—protection of the environment by the promotion of low population growth, the limiting of industrial development and the curtailment of illmotivated advertising.— Yours, etc., PAT PETERS. November 2, 1972.
