“Dear”
Sir,—May I protest against a practice which is becoming increasingly prevalent among shop and restaurant assistants? I refer to the nauseating habit of addressing customers as “dear.’ Surely this epithet should be reserved for members of the family and friends. I can assure them that my reaction is anything but endearing.—Yours, etc., D. McD. November 3, 1972.
