Scout trek to Kaiapoi
A net profit of $B7OO is expected from the Spirit of Youth trek held between Christchurch and the Blue Skies scout training centre, at Kaiapoi on Saturday, and the fair in the grounds. This amount is an increase on last year’s figure. The 2100 walkers were about 400 more than for the 1971 trek. Enthusiasm appeared as high as ever, quite a few handicapped boys covering the whole 12 miles, including one on crutches who raised more than $36. The trek is not intended as a race, although there was keen interest in first arrivals, whose times indicated that this year it was more an actual walk than a practice harrier run. Bernard Musson, aged 12, a member of the Avonside scout troop, arrived first at 10.30 a.m. backed by four sponsors. James Elliott, aged 14, a member of the Sacred Heart troop, Addington, arrived 7min later, followed closely by a former scout, Peter Gilmour, aged 15, and Ross Bathurst, aged 17, of the Mairehau venturer unit, who was second last year. The first cub arrivals were Mark Lovegrove, aged 11, of the Papanui pack, and Stuart Henwood, aged 10, of the Avonside pack, at 10.26 a.m. Two guides, Jan and Sally Gregor, who are cousins, and a girls’ brigade member, Lynda Jameson, were the first girls to arrive at 11.48 a.m.
