"Athlete of Week" award to Miss Trimble for 400m

The outstanding Toe H sprinter, Miss L. Trimble, showed splendid early season form with a winning run of 58.9 sec in the women's 400 metres during the inter-club track and field meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Runner-up in the last New Zealand 200 metres championship at Hamilton, her form suggests that she will make even greater impact on the national scene this season. She clearly has great potential over the longer 400 metres distance and if her development continues along the same lines this could be the event she will run for New Zealand in the 1974 Comonwealth Games in Christchurch.

Miss Trimble was presented with the Farmers’ “Athlete of the Week” award for her grand run in the 400 metres. But she also showed good form in the 100 metres, taking second place in 12.8 sec behind the highly promising young Technical sprinter, Miss B. Petersen. Her winning time was 12.6 sec. The senior men’s 100 metres sprint resulted in a very narrow win for B. Ford (Technical). He made a superb start to dip through the tape inches ahead of the fast-fin-ishing High School Old Boys athlete, T. Cochrane. Both were credited with the same time, 11.4 sec.

The reigning Canterbury champion, G. Anderson (Old Boys), was close behind in third place. O.lsec slower.

Although “running for fun,” A. W. Tweedie (Old Boys), had too much pace for his rivals in the senior 400 metres, winning in 50.7 sec. His club-mate, N. Daniel, was second after losing ground slightly towards the finish.

The outstanding performance by a male athlete was undoubtedly K. G. Simpson’s winning leap in the long jump of 23ft Ilin. This was only a Jin less than his provincial record. After the contest, the talented Toe H athlete was convinced he had cleared 23ft HJin, but the leap was recorded in metric measurement (7.29 metres) and converted to 23ft Ilin. However, Simpson would not have had the jump recognised as a record because of wind assistance. His performance was. nevertheless, very encouraging. All his jumps were more than 23ft. In the hammer, the reigning national champion. W. J. Nicholl (Technical), had to call on his his reserves to defeat his clubmate and rival, B. Harland. Nicholl finally won the contest with a throw of 177 ft Sin but Harland was close behind with his best of 173 ft Ilin. The New Zealand javelin champion. D. C. Leary (Toe H), indicated that it would not be long before he was throwing past the 200 ft mark when he won the senior event on Saturday with a distance of 191 ft l?in. Another field events athlete to show good form was the 17st shot putter, H. J. Ruffell (Technical), with a put of 50ft 4in. In his first outing of the season over hurdles, R. Mclntosh (Old Boys) was a comfortable winner of the 400 metres hurdles. The time of 57.45ec was well short of that which he achieved in winning the national title earlier this year, but was a satisfactory start to the season. Mclntosh had to accept second place in the shorter 100 metres hurdles. This was won by the New Zealand decathlon cham-

pion, M. Mene (Technical), by inches. Both athletes were credited with the same time, 17sec. At the end of the second round in the A.N.Z. Bank premiership competition, the Technical club was in a very comfortable position with 317 points. High School Old Boys, the winners of the premiership last season, retained their second place from the first round but were struggling to hold off a strong challenge from Toe H. Old Boys have 259 points and Toe H 253. Valuable points were lost by Old Boys in the senior 4 x 100 metres relay when they were disqualified at the last baton change while holding a slight lead. Fourth position is held by Cash-mere-New Brighton with 194 and fifth by University-Shirley-Christ’s College with 182.
