Shot soldier dies
A young soldier who suffered a serious head wound when shot in an incident at Burnham Camp early on October 28 died in the Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning. He was Gary Heath, aged 19, of Twizel.
The police took possession of a .22 pistol after the shooting, which occurred about 1.30 a.m.
Late on the morning of October 28, another soldier was remanded in Army custody to November 6 when he appeared in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on a charge of injuring a soldier in such circumstances that if death had been caused he would have been guilty of manslaughter.
No plea was taken, and the defendant’s name was suppressed.
