SCHOOLBOYS IN SOFTBALL TEAM

Two schoolboys, S. Richardson and P. McFarlane, are included in the Canterbury softball team to compete in the national Beatty Cup tournament in Dunedin soon after Christmas.

The team was chosen from a trial match at the Papanui Domain yesterday.

Richardson (Deep Freeze) and McFarlane (Richmond) represented Canterbury at schoolboy level last season, but this is the first time they have been included in the province’s senior side. There are no major surprises in the team, and although most of the players are relatively young, most are very experienced.

THREE PITCHERS There are three pitchers— G. A. Roberts (Papanui), R. Fife (Western Suburbs), and K. Smith (Richmond) —included in the 14-man squad, although Smith was probably selected for his batting ability. Roberts pitched successfully for Canterbury last season and Fife has been in good form for Suburbs.

Among those players unavailable for selection were the top pitcher, D. Bradbury (United), D. Chee (Richmond) and M, Reid (Papanui). The team is:

Roberts, G. Phillips, D. Phillips, D. Eager (Papanui); T.

Smith, K. Smith, G. Panagiotldls, McFarlane, D. Rea (Richmond); B. Mounford, D. Daw (United): Richardson (Deep Freeze); Fife, R. Johnston (Western Suburbs).
