Concern about pit proposal
Plans by the Waimairi County Council to have a shingle pit off Willows Road, Harewood, are not favoured by the North Canterbury Catchment Board. When the question was raised at a meeting of the board yesterday, the rivers control and drainage committee said that it was concerned at the possibility of pollution of the public water-supply acquifers if deep excavations were made. Told that the Eyre County Council had sought the board's opinion — the land is half in Eyre County and half in Paparua County — the board agreed that it would be preferable for Waimairi to extract shingle from the Waimakariri River, especially as the pit could become a rubbish tip.
