Induction as Methodist president
The Rev. W. S. Dawson, who served as minister at the Durham Street Methodist Church for 10 years, will be inducted as president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand at the Church’s 150th anniversary conference in Whangarei today. Mr Dawson, who is 54, was born in Dunedin and brought up in Gisborne. He entered Trinity Theological College in 1940 and studied part-time at Auckland and Victoria universities, graduating M.A. in psychology in 1952. He was ordained in 1947, and served as chaplain in Japan with the New Zealand occupation forces in 1948. Before coming to Christchurch, Mr Dawson served at Whangarei, Porirua (five years), and Takapuna (eight years). From the beginning of this year, he has served at the Pitt Street Methodist Church in Auckland. Mr Dawson was president of the National Council of Churches from 1968 to 1969, and has been on the executive committee for 10 years. He is a former co-chairman of
the joint working committee of the N.C.C. and the Roman Catholic Church.
Freighter wrecked
The 3330-ton Cypriot freighter Kryanaruko went aground and broke up early today on Horn’s Reef, 10 miles from the Voel lightship, off Denmark, in the North Sea, the Danish SeaRescue Service reports. The crew of 17 took to lifeboats, and were all safely rescued by helicopters, and flown to Esbjerg.—Esbjerg, Nov. 3.
