Self Help Trust grants

Youth organisations would receive more than 25 per cent of the Sutherland Self Help Trust funds this year for the “tremendous social pressures and problems facing youth today,” the chairman of the trust board (Mr J. Sutherland) said in a statement.

The board had distributed grants totalling $116,800 to 234 associations this year, bringing the amount distributed since the trust was formed in 1962 to $877,500.

Announcing the granting of $31,200 to youth organisations, Mr Sutherland said the board felt an obligation to those organisations working to develop young people as citizens.

The largest single grants of $5OOO each go to the National Children’s Health Research Foundation in Auckland, and to Birthright, because the board is “particularly conscious of the problems of those people raising children under difficulties.” The board will meet early next year to discuss which organisations will be invited to apply in 1973, because it will be reverting to its normal policy of devoting the entire funds available for distribution to a limited number of major projects. Last year grants of $60,000 and $50,000 were made to the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society, and to the Plunket Society, respectively.
