Committee widening
A suggestion by the i general - manager of the Christchurch Airport (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) that the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce’s air services committee should be enlarged to include architects, engineers and town planners was well: received at a council meeting of the chamber this week. The chairman of the Airport Authority (Cr W. Massey) and Mr Jamieson gave addresses at the invitation of the chamber.
Cr Massey assured that' the policy of the City Council and Airport Authority. was one of expansion. He considered that three million persons a year would be using the airport in the next decade. Mr Jamieson agreed and said he was certain that there would be North Pacific flights out of the airport in a year or two. He said that the Airport Authority, through the City Council, was buying land for the extension of the runway to 10,000 ft. Twin runways would not be needed until 1990. There was room for expanion to the west and land was zoned rural so that it could not be built on. The authority was keeping a close eye on the zoning. “Land developers are exerting some pressures on the eastern boundaries of the airport. Your committee is doing a good job but I think its base should be widened so that total community involvement in the airport, and its protection, is achieved."
