VIEWERS’ VIEWS
Letters on television topics are subject to the rules applying to general correspondence. LICENCE FEES Last Saturday, October 28, I received an account for my television licence fee. This is not due until the end of November. The indecent haste to collect viewers’ money would not be so bad if the programmes were worth watching; but with efforts like “Nichols,” “Pukemanu,” “The Protectors,” “You Must Be Joking,” and some issues of “Gallery,” television is definitely on the down grade. Now, of course, we have those television stars — the politicians. 1 think that, instead of charging a licence fee, the N.Z.B.C. should pay a generous retainer to those brave souls who still find entertainment in television.— BACK TO RADIO. “SINISTER STREET’ Correction: just for the record and to give credit where it is certainly due, the part of the pathetic, broken-down prostitute in the last episode of “Sinister Street” was played by Diana King, who has been seen before in a variety of minor roles, one being that of George Starling’s vacuous mother in “Marriage Lines” —proof of what a fine and'
versatile actress she is. If I’m not mistaken, Valerie Gearon appeared only briefly at the end of the episode, as “Sylvia Scarlet,” - Lily’s friend.—B. PORTER. FILMS On behalf of many I talk to we would like to see Saturday’s television feature film commence about 8.15 p.m. so we can enjoy a much preferred old-time film and still get to bed reasonably early. The youngsters are mostly out on the town and we oldies hate late nights and worse still, to go to bed without a fiIm.—PLEASED AND HOPEFUL.
