OPEN LIST
'(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The World Cup golf tournament in Melbourne next week has proved a fillip for the New Zealand Open tournament, entries for which were announced yesterday by the New Zealand Golf Association. The Open — the fifty-sixth — will be played at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club’s course from November 23. Swedes, a Dutchman, Chinese, a Mexican, and several Britons have entered, making it one of the best-represented fields in the history of the event. Three men who have shared the title between them for several years, K. Nagle, P. Thomson, and R. J. Charles, will all be competing again.
China’s Lu Liang-Huan, runner-up to L. Trevino in last year’s British Open, will be one of the stars in the field, teeing off in the first round with T. Ball and Nagle.
Notable New Zealanders, apart from Charles, are W. J. Godfrey, J. M. Lister, F. Malloy, and A. J. Palmer.
A host of Australians have entered, some well-known on New Zealand courses, others not. Apart from Thomson
and Nagle, about the bestknown is G. Marsh. Only E. J. McDougall of the New Zealand team at the recent Eisenhower Trophy tournament in Buenos Aires will compete, the names of G. Clarke, R. C. Murray, and S. G. Jones not appearing in the entries. The team’s non-travelling reserve, R. Baritrop, will be in the field.
