Mayor defines Church’s role
Unless Churches were prepared to speak out on issues that were wrong for society, their existence was worth nothing, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) told the annual national assembly of the Baptist Union of New Zealand at its opening in Christchurch on Thursday evening. About 200 delegates are attending the assembly, which will end on Thursday. “I hope you will continue to speak out on those issues which are wrong for society,’’ Mr Pickering said. “This is your role. If you are not prepared to stand up and speak out, then your existence is for naught,” he said. “You are taking stock of the Church and the ways to strengthen the Christian community and teach Christian principles. “All sorts of pressures are being placed on society. The political aspirants of our city all have their theories, but I consider there is no other answer to our problems except that people are prepared to accept the Christian way of life,” he said.
